~Ted Seth Jacobs~
Artist Statement to BACAA and future Art Students interested in studying Realism.

"What is needed today is a new interpretation of visual reality, a new artistic realist vision.
The realism I see now is largely a skillful rehash of Nineteenth Century styles. It is too simplistic and formulaic. Art cannot go forward by walking backward. In fact, reviving 19th Century styles will strengthen the Anti-Realists' contention that realism is a dead.
Realism is not dead; it has been the artists' dynamism that died.
Restructured Realism (RR) has assimilated the past tradition and carried it forward.
Our essential subjects are Light and Form. RR analyses in depth the actions of light, and breaks down its gradations to a granular size. RR raises the illusion of the brilliance of light to a higher level. Light is Color! The world doesn't look like a dark brown painting.
Each change of value requires a corresponding change of hue and chroma.
Paintings done with a limited palette cannot suggest the limitless range of Nature.
RR carries the analysis of form, which is the study of structure, to a higher level than in the past. It breaks down structures from the largest, to very small. All structural shapes are analyzed as modified by their actions. You will feel as if you are seeing into the inner workings of Nature. The flow of Life!
RR applies general principles to very specific instances. It looks for the closest possible match that paint can create, to what is seen.
RR is essentially a science of perception. It is a vehicle, or vocabulary. It empowers you to make Art, to create a new vision appropriate to the Information age
."

"Special Emphasis will be given to getting a likeness. For a good likeness, it is necessary that every part of the face is a portrait, that every form expresses the character of one unique individual. This begins with the special shape of the subject's head, and extends to the smallest structures. We will analyze the structures and actions of clothing and drapery. Whatever has the attribute of movement contains structure. Often neglected, the dynamics of clothing and drapery are very important for portrait and picture making.
Ted Seth Jacobs 2007"

"To have extended our understanding of human and organic structure, through a profound analysis of form, from larger to very small subdivision In order to create a realistic style relevant to our times, it is necessary to elevate it to a higher level than what was done in the past, to push the suggestion of what is seen to the limits of what paint can do. The greater part of my instruction consists in the clear exposition of underlying general principles. These essentially abstract effects are, so to speak, embedded in the reality of what we see. For example, ideas of movement, light, gestural intent, visual sizes, tilts and distances, and so forth. These numerous simple principles must all be coordinated and orchestrated. Our study is the visual field, and all the relationships within it. Properly trained, you will be able to convincingly paint whatever the eyes see. These general principles are then applied to extremely specific The nuances of light gradation, the complexity of interlocking forms, the constant variations in Nature, all make our task very demanding. This course then, is not for the fainthearted. It is very intensive. You will be given a great quantity of solid information. I want students who are hungry for this kind of knowledge. Not hungry, starved.
"My goal is to continue to train future artists and teachers" Ted Seth Jacob

This course will sequentially present fundamental and advanced concepts of visual perception and their application to drawing from direct observation. A thorough understanding of the visual experience and of the human figure is essential for anyone wishing to express and translate these elements to the picture plane. Students will learn to separate the elements, studying them independently and re-constructing and combining them with the other elements to create well-unified and holistic drawings.
This will foster the student's ability to perceive the visual experience with intelligence, apply this knowledge to their work and cultivate an ability to problem solve and self-correct through the process of building paintings and drawings.
Working on a two-week pose, students will explore the elements of proportion, gesture, perspective, light on form, relative value, and composition & design through the construction of a completed drawing and separate studies.

Michael studied painting and drawing at the Art Student's League of NY, The National Academy, The New York Studio School, The Ecole Albert Defois, The Water Street Atelier and independent studies in anatomy and dissection at Facultad Medicina, Argentina.

Mr. Grimaldi has taught figure and portrait drawing and painting at The School of Visual Arts, NY; The National Academy, NY; The Seattle Academy of Fine Arts, WA; The Water Street Atelier, NY; Studio Incamminati, PA; Studio 126, NY, and at the Grand Central Academy of Art, NY which he co-founded, Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier.

Syllabus

In order to first establish a dialog between instructor and student, this 5 day course is divided into phases or subtopics for the first three days. Thereafter, a long pose under natural light is set for all day sessions. This enables beginners to begin and restart as often as they wish, while more advanced painters refine their studies.

One should anticipate the ongoing discussion drawing from life to be heavily based upon a professional strategy (prioritizing the approach). For example, on the first day an early theme will be seizing the energy and character of the model's pose, to be followed by a strong push toward perceptual drawing. A quest to redefine proportion (and how to impose it) while discovering engaging patterns of light and dark within a rectangle should greatly assist the contemporary in discovering fundamental design elements. These initial concerns effectively set the stage for more intermediate and advanced concepts, such as structure, the focus of which will make up the majority of the course. A figure demonstration is planned within the workshop. One on one discussions, as well as studio talks and critical feedback of each participant's work, will simultaneously take place.

WORKSHOP > Jon deMartin Figure Drawing September 20-24, 2010

Jon DeMartin

Taught at BACAA 2007, 2008, 09

Septmeber 20-24, 2010

Jon is absolutely one of the best teachers around. His ability to deconstruct, reconstruct and conceptually understand the figure is unmatched. A very strong teacher and excellent for beginner, intermediate and advanced students." - Michael Grimaldi, coodirector Janus Ny

Jon deMartin received his B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, NY. He studied with Michael Aviano, Gustav Rehberger, Nelson Shanks and independently with Daniel Greene. Additionally, he trained in cast drawing with Millet Andrejevic and Edward Schmidt. He is represented by Hirschl & Adler, New York; John Pence Gallery, San Francisco; and The Classical Gallery, Alexandria VA. He is also an instructor at the Art Students League, NY; the Lyme Academy, CT and the New York Academy.

The purpose of the workshop is to set clearly the framework for learning the craft of life drawing as a foundation for serious figurative work. We will focus on the head and figure in both short and long pose. The study and practice of drawing is to develop an understanding of the underlying abstractions, geometry and structures that exists in nature.
Students will develop concepts based on analytical observation and study of theoretical and historical references. This will help develop the skill to successfully create believable representations from direct observation, as well as from memory or imagination.

The morning sessions will be dedicated to drawing the head in a long pose that will last five days. Both morning and afternoon sessions will begin with short poses before the long pose.

The objective of the short poses is to seize the head or figure quickly and vigorously to capture the rhythmic action of the pose and to acquire knowledge of its construction. The afternoon session will be devoted to a long pose drawing of the figure that will also carry over one week. The long pose is designed make a thorough study of the model’s gesture, shape, construction and light on form. We will analyze the differences and the similarities of short and long pose drawing approaches and why both are necessary for a well-rounded understanding of the head and figure.

Demonstrations with historical references will be used to accent each stage of the drawing process. Materials and methods will be studied that pertain to certain styles of drawing. Individual needs of each student are addressed and there will be lectures and demonstrations from the model.

Jon deMartin was born in Wilmington, Delaware and received a B.F.A. from the Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Arts Students League with Gustav Rehberger, Nelson Shanks and independently with Michael Aviano. WORKSHOP > Carl Dobsky September 6-17, 2010

Carl Dobsky
Portrait Painting Workshop

September 6-17, 2010
Portrait Painting Workshop

Over the course of the workshop, fundamental principles of proportion, design, light, form, and color will be addressed with a focus on their specific application to portraiture.
In the beginning stages consideration will be given to composition and selection of views that will enhance the dramatic element of the picture. Strategies to that end will be discussed while quick sketches will be used to explore different solutions that will help to bring a sense of the sitter’s character and personality to the painting.
After the pose has been settled on, a drawing focusing on the likeness of the model will be made using a block-In method. Attention will be given to proportion and accuracy of shapes, as well as the underlying structures and forms of the head.
When the block-in is finished, it will be transferred to a canvas using

Self Portrait oil on canvass

an oil transfer technique. There will also be a brief discussion of materials and their uses.
The first pass of the painting will be an ebauche where the entire subject is treated together as a whole. Special attention will be given to relation of values and colors to give an estimate of the finished picture. Layout of the palette and color mixing will be discussed.
Subsequent sessions will be used to work towards completion of the portrait. Various elements such as form, light, edges, color, and other visual phenomenon will be discussed as they arise.

WORKSHOP > Juliette Aristides 5 Day Figure Drawing March 29-April 2, 2010

Juliette Aristides

5 Day Figure Drawing Workshop
March 29-April 2, 2010
Taught at BACAA 2007, 2008
returns to teach 2010

Learn to create timeless figure drawings in the tradition of the old masters. This one week intensive workshop focuses on the elements of figure drawing and guides the students through the path necessary to achieve great art. Demonstrations, slide shows and lectures will present you with many opportunities to increase your understanding of the artist's craft while working from life. During the course of the week you will develop your figure drawing, to help you to build successful skills for independent work and problem-solving proficiency. You will gain much practical knowledge to assist along the path of being a contemporary figurative artist.

Drawing the human form is the benchmark of a classical education and forms the focal
point of our atelier program. We are not simply copying nature, rather in the spirit of the Greeks, we seek to understand nature so thoroughly that we can reconstruct it to convey the power of life. The goal is unflinching accuracy combined with a thorough knowledge of design.
Focus on creating a strong block-in, understanding the gesture, separating the shadow
from the light, and then concentrate on understanding and rendering form
.

WORKSHOP > Douglas Flynt Portrait Painting June 7-18, 2010

Douglas Flynt

10 Day Portrait Painting Workshop
June 7-18, 2010

This workshop will be an extensive look at the process involved with portrait painting, which favors the classical and academic sensibilities. The difficulty level is geared toward intermediate through advanced students.

There will be daily in-depth demonstrations/lectures ranging from approx. 1-2½ hours depending on the topic being discussed. The majority of each day will be filled with individual critique as students are allowed many hours to work toward the development of their own pieces.

Learn to see for shape, line, rhythm, proportion, structure and color along with how light interacts with form as we explore in-depth the whole of the connection between painting and seeing explained through metaphor, theory and application.

Some of the concepts that will be addressed are how to set up proportional relationships, blocking-in and then refining a drawing, color theory, how light on form affects our perceptions of color in its various components of hue, value and chroma, how to relate those components, mixing paint, setting up a palette layout, along with many other ideas.

WORKSHOP > Sadie Valeri June 28-July 2, 2010

Still Life Painting workshop

June 28-July 2, 2010

Wrapped Pitcher
6 x 8 inches
oil on panel

The sensitive observation of even simple objects can yield dramatic paintings. Working in oil paint on gessoed panel, students will learn the refined glazing and layering techniques to render the most subtle effects of light. Beginning with a drawing on paper transferred to smooth panel, we will paint open grisaille, closed grisaille, opaque layering, and finally glazing to create highly refined images. Using knowledge gained through her studies of the effects of light on transparent and reflective surfaces through her "Wax Paper" series of still lifes, Sadie Valeri will share her methods for creating powerful and sensitive paintings. More importantly, she teaches how to see and understand the structure, value, and color principles that underpin believable realism.

Sadie Valeri graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in illustration and has since studied with some of the most important realist artists working today including Juliette Aristides, Michael Grimaldi, Dan Thompson, and Ted Seth Jacobs at the Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier, with Jacob Collins at the Hudson River Fellowship, and with Timothy Stotz and Michelle Tully at Studio Escalier in Paris. Sadie's painting "Wax Paper II" was a finalist in the 2009 Art Renewal Center Salon. She currently teaches graduate students at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
