COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Join us for this exciting workshop in beautiful Oxford England. During this six day intensive workshop, you will learn a sequential approach to confidently draw the human figure and how to express life through your design. During the workshop we will learn a set of skills that have informed artists for centuries. Each day we will address a different aspect of drawing, from blocking-in to rendering on toned paper using charcoal or graphite and the option to use colored pastel pencils for a contemporary take on traditional drawing.
During our week we will visit the exquisite Ashmolean print room to explore a collection drawings of the old masters. BACAA will host an invited scholar to share their insights on the specific subjects chosen by the instructor. Students will also have the opportunity to develop drawing from the Randolph Sculpting Gallery and the Cast Room.
Looking back to the role of drawing as a foundation of art and essential to seeing beauty in the world around us. Set in the Ashmolean Museum which houses John Ruskin’s famed collection of over a thousand drawings for students done by himself and others. Ruskin believed in the importance of drawing and observation of nature as a valuable human endeavor. Through his influence, the Pre-Raphaelites revival of the handmade and beautiful was seen as a personal and social good. These thoughts will serve as a departure point for us to examine the role of art in our time through conversations and readings.
During our studio sessions, after a daily demonstration or brief lecture you will begin drawing directly from the model. Aristides will alternate critiques and ongoing drawings so that you can see how finished drawings from the model develop. You will have the opportunity to develop several drawings throughout the workshop, combining technique with expression, as we explore the beauty of the nude figure.
Lastly, we will enjoy time together! There are few things more life affirming than artists gathering together. With this in mind, we will have a pub night and a dinner together on the last workshop day to continue for friendship and conversation. Our week together will be an opportunity for serious study and lively connection.
