Dates: June 19-25, 2025
June 19-20 - Two Days of Instructed Museum work
June 21-25 - Five days of Drawing in the Studio from the live model
Course Description:
Explore the timeless techniques of the old masters in this immersive drawing workshop. First two days will be instructed museum days where we will explore composition, mark making, and form through the act of mastercopies directly from observation in the Ashmolean Museum. From day three to four students will develop the figure block-in from life. Then day five to seven we will dive into the rendering stage where essential concepts of light, volume, and color will be introduced. Participants can choose to either draw with graphite or dry medium pastel (colors are optional) from a live model, with an emphasis on precise observation and classical methods.
The workshop breaks down the creative process into manageable steps, beginning with a linear block-in to establish a strong foundation. This will enhance your proficiency in the rendering stage, where we’ll explore the intriguing relationship between the physics of light and our perception of value.
Throughout the course, individual instruction and live demonstrations will guide you through each stage of the process. By the end of the 25-hour pose, you’ll aim to complete a figure study, as well as, the finished mastercopy from the Ashmolean Museum. With the instructor's permission, you may have the chance to work on a additional mastercopy in the first two days as long as it aligns with spacing guidelines. This workshop is open to all skill levels.
