Cast Class
Emily Hedge
BACAA Thursday evening Cast Class & Open Model Session Registration and Independent Study
Hours: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Course Description:
The goal of this course is to give both new and returning students an opportunity to develop their life drawing skills from BACAA’s collection of classical cast models. This four-week session will allow students to work at their own pace while continuing to benefit from the guidance and shared workspace of an instructor. Each student will be asked to work from a single cast model for the duration of this course. Returning students will be allowed to continue developing cast drawing work from their previous BACAA courses. New students will be assigned a model to work from upon the first day of class and will be demonstrated the appropriate steps in order to refine their drawing process in accordance with academic principles. This class is intended for beginning and intermediate students, working in graphite or charcoal pencils.
Bio:
Whether in classical performance or visual art-making sectors, Emily Hedge has spent the majority of her life seeking and studying new ways to understand herself and humanity through an array of creative pursuits. After spending her former years as a dedicated contemporary ballet dancer, Emily’s focus shifted when she became engrossed in the process of life drawing after a powerful introduction to academic art-making practices at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Emily’s studies were guided by the likes of nationally and internationally renowned contemporary artists including Henry Yan, Tumutsu Takishima, Kevin Moore, and Craig Nelson. While in school, Emily’s work was repeatedly selected for juried exhibitions and now holds positions in various private collections spanning from New York to California. In addition to her artistic endeavors; Emily has successfully bridged her experience as a dancer with her connections in the academic studio-classroom environment to build a sought-after art modeling carrier, further developing her understanding of the full spectrum of creative energies that regularly contribute to the broad world of fine art.
Personally, Emily likens the practice of life drawing and painting to that of a meditative exercise: a routine offering a unique combination of mental challenges and rewards that can be difficult to access elsewhere amid the rapid pace of modern life. When she is not attending to her craft, Emily is a full-time mother to her young son. They reside in her hometown of Palo Alto, California.
