Overview
Still life is my absolute favorite way of teaching composition and color. It often involves very simple objects arranged in a way that creates incredible depth and color variety, usually more than you would ever find in a figure painting. We can explore ways of creating depth in paintings, creating harmonious color arrangements, and use of edges to create a beautiful painting.

We'll begin by doing a few arrangements of the objects you bring in to class to experiment with different ways of composing a painting to create the most depth and variety on a 2d surface.
As this is a fairly concise 4 day workshop we'll try to use objects that are somewhat small as I always try to do still life paintings at life size. Fruits and vegetables work well but anything that won't die or change shape too much can work well. (Flowers do not work for this. They’re too complex and they move constantly, that's a specialty for another class
Day 1.
Set up and composition studies. This can be done with charcoal or black and white paint. We are mostly looking for beautiful value arrangements here so something with a full range is necessary.
Day 2.
Block in grisaille and first color pass. We will start with fairly loose drawing to get out composition down and then begin adding color, looking for brightest lights, darkest shadows and big simple color spotting. Paint should remain somewhat thin here so we don't build up paint too early.
Day 3.
Refinement. Full color and full value. The goal with the second pass is to begin finding much subtler color and value patterns. Still moving around the entire painting but working more opaquely. Refinement of the drawing is always a priority and should be continued tod
Day 4.
Focus. Today we will focus in on the focal point and push that to a very high finish. We begin by rewetting the canvas with thinner colors and then pushing into smaller and smaller shapes, focusing as always on big form value and form color arrangements. The goal is too finish this passage we work on today at this point. It doesn't always get 100 percent there but we will be pushing for it.
