BACAA/Emily Hedge Discovering Life Drawing: The First Steps 2025

Discovering Life Drawing:
Dates: February 4, 11, 18, 25, 2025
Next Class: March 4, 11, 15, 25, 2025
Next Class: April 1, 8, 15, 22, 2025
Hours: 9:40 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. (2 hours)

Course Description:

This course is designed to prep brand-new students with the necessary understanding of basic materials, terminology, and techniques needed to fully participate in continued life drawing courses here at BACAA.  This class is a recommended foundation for potential art students with an interest in life- drawing, but little to no experience studying classical drawing principals.
The projects we approach in this class remain simple, beginning with geometric objects and moving into more complex organic structures.  The goal in mind being to familiarize students with the nuanced process of traditional life-drawing without getting overwhelmed by complicated subject matter.  We will cover proper subject set up, how to create a “block-in” and how to render light’s effect on form.  Students will be encouraged to thoroughly familiarize themselves with each step of the process before moving on, gradually moving into long-form drawings using familiar media; graphite on white paper.  Every piece of the process is designed to reduce the initial intimidation surrounding these concepts and ready students with basic information to complete future courses and workshops at BACAA.
The introduction to the class begins with a set of four classes, focusing on properties of a sphere and moving into a simple still life drawing.
If students wish to continue, a second set of four classes will be offered with an overview of the torso and finally moving on to the head, using pieces from our cast collection.

Note:  Intermediate or advanced students who are new to BACAA may be referred to a different course upon admission, please consult our staff before enrolling.

Emily Hedge Bio:

Whether in classical performance or visual art making sectors, Emily Hedge has spent the majority of her lifetime seeking and studying new ways to understand herself and humanity through an array of creative pursuits.  After spending her former years as a dedicated contemporary ballet dancer, Emily’s focus shifted when she became engrossed in the process of life drawing after a powerful introduction to academic art-making practices at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.  Emily’s studies were guided by the likes of nationally and internationally renowned contemporary artists including Henry Yan, Tumutsu Takishima, Kevin Moore, and Craig Nelson.  While in school, Emily’s work was repeatedly selected for juried exhibitions and now holds positions in various private collections spanning from New York to California.  In addition to her artistic endeavors; Emily has successfully bridged her experience as a dancer with her connections in the academic studio-classroom environment to build a sought after art modeling carrier, further developing her understanding of the full spectrum of creative energies that regularly contribute to the broad world of fine art.

Personally, Emily likens the practice of life drawing and painting to that of a meditative exercise: a routine offering a unique combination of mental challenges and rewards that can be difficult to access elsewhere amid the rapid pace of modern life.  When she is not attending to her craft, Emily is a full time mother to her young son.  They reside in her hometown of Palo Alto, California.

BACAA Thursday evening Cast Class & Open Model Session Registration and Independent Study

Dates: TBA
Hours: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Course Description:

The goal of this course is to give both new and returning students an opportunity to develop their life drawing skills from BACAA’s collection of classical cast models. This four-week session will allow students to work at their own pace while continuing to benefit from the guidance and shared workspace of an instructor. Each student will be asked to work from a single cast model for the duration of this course. Returning students will be allowed to continue developing cast drawing work from their previous BACAA courses. New students will be assigned a model to work from upon the first day of class and will be demonstrated the appropriate steps in order to refine their drawing process in accordance with academic principles. This class is intended for beginning and intermediate students, working in graphite or charcoal pencils.

Second my teaching style is such that I’m hands on and will guide you step by step through the process of creating a work of art from life

BACAA Semi-Private Cast Class for Beginners Registration
Hours: 2:45-4:45 p.m. (2 hours)

Course Description

Course Description:

Students will have the opportunity to draw in the cast room from several historical casts placed in separate stations for each student.

The process is drawing accurately the proportion, structure & how to correctly block in the outside graphic shape. The next step is to develop the contour of the outside shape. Drawing carefully the high points of each structure as the forms overlap, transition and suture. Finally we will have the opportunity to model the form, drawing careful the tonal transitions of the the light on the natural organic forms. Keeping in mind the light orientation on each structure the study and science of light on the form.

Most Importantly please know this is a slow method of observation and application. Second my teaching style is such that I’m hands on and will guide you step by step through the process of creating a work of art from life.

• We will discuss the Principles of Light and zones• Draw an accurate drawing with proportions and angle of light on Form
• How light rakes over the form to create the illusion of turning form.

Testimonials:

“I also wanted to share with you that I used the concept of reference points in the lessons that I taught to my beginning art students, most of whom were certain that they had never drawn before and doubted they could ever draw. In one week, everyone was drawing beautifully from observation! I made the connection to looking at constellations… stars. I had them just draw constellations like the “Big Dipper” and others from projections on a screen and we could just focus on seeing relationships and proportions and measuring of relative distances between points and alignments. They got it! then when we gradually moved over to “filling in the details of images”, the kids had the skills to find their way. Thank you!!! Your gift of teaching me has come through to 30 young people!” Liz.
