Dates: January 23-27, 2025 (5) days
Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Course description:
Fundamentals of academic figure drawing. An introduction to the manual, procedural, and analytical techniques of drawing applied to the figure.
Schedule:
In this workshop Tony demonstrates the drawing process each day from the beginning of class until lunch break (2.25 hrs.) He works with students individually during the afternoon session (3 hrs.) This is a "long pose" drawing method. Students work on one drawing all week. After lunch the model resumes the demo pose and holds it for the rest of the day, with the usual breaks.
Form, Light, and the Human Figure:This drawing workshop is for students wishing to develop an understanding of the classical tradition of figure drawing. The human figure is an infinitely rich subject. It has been said that "If you can learn to draw and paint the figure, you can draw and paint anything." For centuries artists have trained themselves by studying the complex form of the body, and its associated pattern of light and shade. Participants in this five-day workshop will be introduced to a refined, articulate drawing style. The focus will be on patience, craft, observation, and understanding of drawing principles. Students will learn a practical drawing method that serves as a framework in which to study the elements of drawing. Drawings are built up methodically through a succession of linear and tonal stages. Each stage in particular embodies and exemplifies one or more universal aesthetic principle: wholeness, simplicity, connection, fluidity, dynamism, volume, structure, organization, and finally the phenomenon of visual experience itself.
Bio:
Beginning in 1983, Anthony Ryder, Author of “The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective On the Classical Tradition” studied six years in New York and France with master painter and teacher, Ted Seth Jacobs. While a student he stepped into the role of instructor, and has subsequently taught drawing and oil painting from life for nearly four decades. He found his vocation in the pursuit of the realization of Ted’s instructions. Perceiving in them the gift of healing the ills imposed on the individual by a dysfunctional society, he decided to distribute the teachings far and wide. Since then he’s devoted himself to their establishment in the artistic community. His roll and joy in life is to share them with students. This body of knowledge originated in the distant past. Ted's great genius was to fathom its depths and gather together a new, shining, harmonious, integrated synthesis. Being a reflection of life, in it is the functioning of life itself. It is not a style, but the permanent wisdom of drawing and painting, expressing itself with a new voice, to a new generation as it has in the past, through many brilliant minds.
